Block Paving in Bournemouth
Tell us the postcode and roughly how big the drive is. Block paving firms covering Bournemouth come back to you with a price.
Block paving a driveway in Bournemouth runs from about £2,400 for a single car space to £7,500 for a wide double. The ground here is sand, which drains freely and holds a drive well once it has been compacted properly. Ask any contractor how deep they are digging before you compare two prices, because on loose sand a shallow dig is what lets a drive sink later.
Block paving is one of the five surfaces we price for Bournemouth drives. Resin, tarmac, concrete and gravel line up beside it on our driveways in Bournemouth page.
What a block drive costs in Bournemouth
The prices below come from two UK cost guides, both refreshed for 2026. Work out your own frontage in square metres, allowing about 20m² for one car and 50m² for two, then read across.

| Drive size | Roughly | Typical cost | Days on site |
|---|---|---|---|
| One car | 20m² | Around £2,400 | 2 to 3 |
| Two cars | 50m² | £5,000 to £7,500 | 3 to 5 |
| Wide or multi car | 80m² and up | £8,000 and up | 5 plus |
Laid, block paving works out at £90 to £150 the square metre. Before any of that, digging out the old surface and carting it away runs another £30 to £50 a square metre.
Block paving on Bournemouth’s sand
The town sits on the Branksome Sand, and a block drive behaves differently on sand than on the clay a few miles west in Poole. Sand brings two advantages here, with one thing to watch.
- Rain soaks straight down. Sand takes water through it, so permeable blocks drain into the ground below rather than backing up on the surface. A soakaway is usually a real option here, where on Poole clay it often is not. That contrast is on our block paving in Poole page.
- Permeable blocks keep you clear of planning. A drive that lets water through stays outside the planning rule whatever its size. The rule in full, and the ground the town sits on, are on our driveways in Bournemouth page.
- Sand needs compacting before it holds. It shifts until it is rolled tight, so the sub-base has to be dug deep and compacted before any blocks are laid. A price well under the others is usually one digging a shallower base.
Choosing the block and the base
The block you pick and the base it sits on decide how the drive looks and how long it holds. Both are set out in full on the other town pages, and they are laid the same way here.
- Choosing the block. Concrete, clay, natural stone and permeable blocks cost and wear differently. How the four differ is on our block paving in Christchurch page.
- The base you never see. Most of the price is under the blocks, in the sub-base and the laying course. The full build is on our block paving in Poole page.
- Colour, pattern and repair. How a colour ages, which pattern holds under a turning car, and lifting a sunk block to relay it, are all on our block paving in Christchurch page.
Block paving across Bournemouth
The age of a Bournemouth street tends to decide what a block drive involves, because the town filled in over several decades.
- Boscombe, Springbourne and Winton. Victorian and Edwardian terraces built close to the pavement, with short frontages. The question here is usually whether the entrance can be widened, not whether the drive can be made longer.
- Southbourne and Tuckton. Interwar semis with frontages often deep enough for one car but tight for two. Two cars side by side need about 5.2m across, so measure the frontage wall to wall first.
- Kinson, Ensbury Park and Redhill. Wider plots on the later estates, usually the most straightforward to work on. Integral garages are common, so check whether the garage counts as a parking space before paving over the front.
- Charminster and Queens Park. A mix of ages and a lot of mature trees. A tree near the front changes the job, and many trees in Bournemouth are protected. The rule is on our driveways in Bournemouth page.
Getting quotes in Bournemouth
Send the postcode and the rough size of the drive. Say which block you are leaning towards, and flag anything awkward like a narrow entrance, a slope, or a tree near the front, because all three change the price.
If the pavement outside still has a full height kerb, that has to be dropped before a car can use the drive, and the crossover is a BCP job rather than the paver’s. The cost and the wait for it are on our driveways in Bournemouth page.
